GEER VAN VELDE

Geer van Velde (1898–1977) had a career marked by poverty and recognition. Early support from Eduard and Wijnand Kramers ended during the Great Depression, leaving him and his brother Bram struggling. Samuel Beckett introduced Geer to key figures, leading to a 1938 London exhibition. Moving to the South of France, he was influenced by Mediterranean light and met Pierre Bonnard and Aimé Maeght. After WWII, he helped Bram exhibit in Paris, but sales remained low. .“Geer van Velde, alchemist of light, uses the vibration of colour and matter to make space tangible" (Lydia Harambourg art historian)
