BRAM VAN VELDE
Bram van Velde (1895-1981) was a Dutch painter who grew up in poverty, working as a house painter before discovering modern art. Moving to Paris, he was influenced by Matisse and Cézanne. During WWII, he faced financial struggles but remained dedicated to his art. In the 1950s, his expressive, emotional style gained recognition across Europe. Writer Samuel Beckett, a close friend, admired Van Velde’s raw authenticity, often writing about his work. Their friendship created a unique dialogue between visual art and literature, cementing Van Velde’s place in modern art history.
